Iowa Class Championship

Author: Tim McEntee

The Iowa Class Championships were held Saturday, May 23 at the Holiday Inn in downtown Des Moines.

Expert/Class A champion is Matt Anzis with a score 3/4.  This is the 3rd successive year that Matt has won a state class championship (Class B in 2007 and Expert/Class A in 2008).  Matt's post rating is 1996, so edging ever so close to being Iowa's newest expert.

Class B champion is Brent Aronsen with a score of 3/4.  He has recently returned to playing chess, in part due to breaking his leg from soccer.

Class C had a tie between Richard Rector and Roger Gotschall with 3.5/4.  Richard won the trophy and title on tie breaks, though Roger gained over 100 rating points for his outstanding performance.

Class D champion is Daniel Johnson with 3/4.  Daniel won his first 3 games and then was defeated by Kenson Cai in the last round.

Class E had a 3 way tie for first between Tenson Cai, Stan Felgar and Jaleb Jay with 4/5.  Tenson won the trophy and title on tie breaks.  Tenson won his first 4 games including a win over Stan Felgar, but was defeated in the last round by Jaleb Jay.

Congratulations to all of our new state champions!  We had 43 players compete for the various titles.  Bill Broich was the organizer of the event and Tim McEntee was the director.
