Bethany Carson wins 2010 Iowa Girls Chess Championship

Author: James Hodina

2009 Champion Bethany Carson defended her title February 13, 2010, to retain her crown as Iowa Girls Chess Championship. Round 3 of this 4 round tournament produced the same top-board paring as in 2009; Bethany Carson versus her sister Sarah Faith and Regan Hodina versus Charity Carson. While Bethany once again defeated her sister, Charity avenged last year's lost to Regan. This set the stage for sisters Bethany and Charity to play for the championship.

This year saw a turnout of 15 girls, up from 10 in 2009. More were expected if not for some last minute withdrawals. Its nice to see the interest in chess continue among girls in Iowa scholastics.

Many thanks to Matt Power and the Kirkwood Community College in Iowa City that provided us the facilities to play this tournament.
